Traveling has many variables and sometimes no matter how careful you plan; the trip can be spoiled by delayed flights or lost baggage.  Problems like this can be eased with the purchase of travel insurance.

Travel insurance is not magic, so it cannot make lost baggage re-appear or turn back the hands of time, but what it can do is provide financial protection for the investment you make into your vacation and travel arrangements.

There are many aspects to travel insurance, which is available for travel options such as cruises, tours, vacation home rentals and air travel.

Medical coverage is typically available with a travel insurance package.  It is not usual for one to become ill during a trip and this component can make a bad situation at least a little easier to deal with.  This section of coverage will pay for doctor visits and medications for things such as food poisoning, disease, prescription medication, and lab tests. Emergency treatments, ambulance services and surgeries are also covered under this type of policy.  The coverage is set up to cover sudden and accidental types of injuries and illnesses so there will be exclusions for pre-existing conditions, routine physical exams or other long-term health care issues.

Sometimes your trip is cancelled for reasons beyond your control.  Sometimes a travel or tour company that goes out of business or weather conditions prevents you from being able to get to your destination.  Travel insurance is designed to cover this situation.  Trips can also be cancelled by you if you become ill or have a death in the family.  Travel insurance can reimburse you if you have to cancel your plans or cut them short under these circumstances.

You are also protected from travel delays.  Some policies offer a reimbursement for flight delays of up to 2 hours.  Others offer full reimbursement for a delay of 5 hours or more, and a partial reimbursement for shorter delays.

If you baggage is lost or stolen, travel insurance will reimburse you for this as well by paying for your luggage and lost personal belongings.  It will also reimburse for damaged luggage.

There are a variety of policies available with many different aspects to the coverage they offer.  Shop around and compare at least three companies before making a decision to buy travel insurance.

The cost for travel insurance can generally be 5% to 7% of the cost of your trip, but this percentage can be higher for lower cost trips.  You will have to carefully examine the cost vs. benefit of a travel insurance policy for your next travel adventure.
