Advancements in medicine and medical technology have advanced the lifespan and general health of our population to a great degree.  All of this advancement comes at a price however and few people could afford the costs of a major medical emergency.  Accordingly, health insurance has become not only commonplace, but also necessary for almost everyone.

Insurers are feeling the pain as well.  As medical treatment becomes more costly and the population ages and becomes more dependent on health insurance coverage insurers are pushed to increase their fees.  Health insurance rate increases are now commonplace.

As health insurance premiums rise and exceed people’s ability to pay, alternatives have naturally arisen in the marketplace.  The two basic categories of health insurance are private health insurance and government funded health insurance.

Private Health Insurance

The most common form of private health insurance coverage is obtained through employer plans.  These plans are often issued by a health insurance company at a lower rate for the employer, and the discount varies depending on the number of employees.  Employers may offer to pay part of the health insurance premium for the employee.  In some cases, employers pay health insurance premiums in full for the employees, but this is becoming increasingly unusual as health insurance premiums increase.

People can obtain insurance directly from health insurance companies as well, but the rates are often much higher than if they were to obtain coverage either through their employer, or through a group plan.  Group plans are offered to individuals that are in some way members of a larger group.  The types of groups vary greatly, but clubs, professional associations, or chambers of commerce can offer group health insurance plans.

Government-funded Health Coverage

For those who simply cannot afford health insurance, or for the elderly, there are government funded health care plans.  These plans offer subsidized health care, which usually includes nominal co-pays or deductibles making medical treatment available to those who would otherwise not be able to afford the care.

Coverage for government funded health care plans is not available to everyone however.  There are qualifications that must be met in terms of age, income, and health condition.  The coverage is not free either.

Plans vary from state to state as to what is covered under government-funded health care coverage, but all plans will generally provide coverage for hospitalization, physician visits, and long-term care.  Additional features can be added to these plans for a fee.

Worldwide, government funded health care is growing in popularity.  There are often complaints that these programs lack the proper funding to be able to provide the best possible health care and service however.  Time will tell if these programs will take over as the best health care alternative.
